Undergraduate Study

The History of Art is an exciting and stimulating field of study with a diverse curriculum, a varied set of approaches and a wide application to modern life and the world of work. The History of Art programme at the University of Birmingham offers you an unrivalled opportunity to study this subject in close association with the important art collections housed in the University’s Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

The Department is located in the Barber Institute. The Barber Institute’s outstanding collections of old master and modern paintings, drawings and sculptures include works by such major artists as Simone Martini, Giovanni Bellini, Veronese, Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin, Murillo, Gainsborough, Monet, Degas, Whistler, Picasso, Gauguin, Rodin, Derain and Magritte. The Institute also houses a concert hall, lecture theatre, slide collection and the best art reference library in the Midlands with holdings of over 60,000 books, periodicals and other items. These together provide the ideal setting and facilities with which to combine the academic study of the history of art with the day-to-day activities of a major gallery, which now organises regular exhibitions and educational activities for the general public.

The staff in the Department reflect the wide range of approaches studied here. Their interests cover European painting, sculpture and architecture from the fifteenth century to the present day. Our staff also  publish books and articles on their specialist fields, as well as organising and contributing to national and international art exhibitions at, among other venues, the Royal Academy, the Huntington Library in California, the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
